Bobby Deerfield – Al PAcino another great performance

Another movie that is not talked about much. Its a drama about a race car dirver , bobby deerfield , played by Al Pacino. When i started watching this , what i expected was a two hour peek into a racer’s life with action packed fast moving circuits and how his life gets affected by a lady he meets. But to my surprise it is a very deep movie. I am not sure if i totally understood what the director intended but i feel it was it was about a man whos a loner. He is not amused by the very sense of life … excitement surprises and tries to find the thrills on race tracks. He meets a woman hwo is really eccentric. At first she seems to be a maniac but as the movie progresses , you kinda get the feel of the character . You begin to understand why the character was shaped in the way it was … it perfectly compliments the metaphor behind the story. She is a terminally ill patient and the eefect she has on bobby deerfield’s life looks abstract but when you try to think the purpose behind the story , you understand the beauty of direction. There is a scene where she tells Pacino to follow a hot air balloon and Pacino replies ,” How can we follow the balloon. We dont know where the balloon is going. The man in the balloon doesn’t know where the balloon is going.” She replies ,” The balloon got away.”
It was very powerful scene for me. According to me the drector here is talking about following life. The very person who lives his own life has no idea where its headed , the fate , the destiny and after a while its gone!!The idea behind the woman’s character is you dont have to worry about the starts , the process , the fate or the result. Just live the moment as it goes , try to experiment and experience.

There are couple of other scenes too that are powehouse. As always theres no doubt about Pacino’s histrionics. Sometimes i wonder why did he stop doing films like Bobby deerfield , And justice for all , Scarecrow. These are the kinda of movies that are very blanch superficially but if you can grasp their meaning , you can watch these over and over again. Still i some where feel i havent really understood this one completely… gotta watch it again to find out if i can understand the message better. Especially the scene where Pacino stops by some place where a guy is gardening. He goes there and after a small conversation just sits there silently. The guy asks him if he wants water. Pacino relies , ” I just want to be with someone. I dont want to talk. I just want to be with someone. Highly recomended if you like watching off-beat dramas. Not for mass-audience looking for entertainment , its a parallel cinema. The dialogues between characters are scripted beautifully. Pacino’s potrayal of the character is really amazing.

Eagle Eye – Movie Review

The first time i saw the promos… dint look very promising to me. After watching the movie, i just have one thing to say…. The director had too many of Red Bulls.

The plot is very shitty …. but direction and editing makes you to get through this movie… The pace of the movie is fine. Doesnt make you feel bored or the scenes dont seem to be unwanted….kudos to the director and editor to make a weak plot seem decent enough. If you wanna see some action… There are loads of cars flying around. SHIA LeBouf and michelle monahagan are good in their characters. For once it seems the climax is gonna be somewhat different but it goes right on track to the ‘FORMULAE’ of Movie Making.

Nothing to do on a weekend…. you can kill some time . would rate it about 5.5 on scale of 10

Sonu Nigam – Kya hua tera vaada Video

Enjoy the video…

Sonu has sung many of Rafi saahab’s song. I will try to compress and upload a folder containing 300 of those very soon. He has done a terrific job and i believe he is the only singer who’s on par with the great legend Rafi saahab. In this video i feel coz of time constraints he has upped the tempo of the song a bit. Neways , just a small riddle…. lets see if you can identify the song below

Meri dhadkan pe rehta hai teri dhadkan ka pehra
Har din har pal hota jaaye pyaar humaara aur bhi gehra
(Sonu)- Chori chori kya kehta hai pyaar ka mausam sindoori
Meri saanson mein ghul jaaye teri saanson ki kastoori
Barson yugo se ye apni mulaqat………………….

Haunting Melodies – Sonu Nigam

What better way is there to express your mood than listening to music? I feel relaxed , somewhat lonely listening to Sonu Nigam playlist. It has kinda sedated me and I share these beautiful songs with all of you

1. Dhalne Lagi Hai Raat – Inteha

There is a duet version and a solo by Sonu. I love the solo version. Dont really like to get interrupted in my state of trance when i listen to this man’s voice. Beautiful lyrics especially the second para.

2. Ek Pal Ke liye Hi sahi – Ankahee

Again there are three versions of this one too , K.K , Shreya Ghoshal , and Sonu Nigam. All three are good but no points for guessing which one is on my playlist.

3. Do Pal Ruka – Veer Zaara

Goosebumps!!!!!!One of my all-time favourites. Sonu Nigam at his best. The music , the lyrics , the emotions … cant get any better than this.

4. Chanda Ki Doli – Chanda Ki Doli (Album)

Sonu Nigam’s own composition. I dont think i need to say anything more about this one.

5. Kuch Tum Kaho – Sharaarat

This song makes me wonder why hasnt our man with golden voice havent tried singing Operas. Once again really good lyrics (Aa tujhe mohabbat ka naam du)

6. Ye Bekhudi Deewangi – Tumko Na Bhul Payenge

Try singing this one yourself. Than only you can realise how immensely difficult is it to input the kind of pitch variations Sonu has done. Not easy even for trained singers.

7. Ajnabee Shehar Hai – Jaaneman
8. Sau Dard hai – Jaaneman

Lovely songs. If you guys know about ‘Raagas’ and ‘Shrutis’ , try listening this one very closely. Will tell about these terminologies of music some time later in detail. For now, shruti is the note(or an interval) between sur. This is a very crude explanation though. In layman terms … when u sing a song that has music notes sa ga ma pa … the note that you sing between singing sa to ga , ga to ma and so on…

9. Tanhayee – Dil Chahta Hai

This one must be everyones playlist favorite. No need to tell nething about this rendition

10. Meri Duniya Mein Aake – Tum Bin

11. Tanha – Gayab

Cant be missed. Lemme know if you guys cant find it.

Sonu Nigam’s first playback

As i promised in my previous write-up :
JAAN KI BAAZI (1985) – Aate aate aate teri yaad aa gayi… jaate jaate jaate mujhe tu rula gayi….

This was sonu nigam’s first playback but ,as far as i know , his version wasn’t released in the movie for some unknown reasons. Usha Khanna was the music director who gave him this chance. There are many more interesting stories from sonu nigam’s struggling time but the most amazing one is the time he performed on stage for the first time. His father, Agam kumar, is also a singer and he used to do stage performances. Agam Kumar was performing in Jind , (a place in haryana) on occasion of Dussera. Out of nowhere Sonu got on the stage and was adamant on singing too. The organisers let him sing and the audience were awe-struck to see a THREE year old child singing Rafi saahab’s Kya hua tera vaada …. it was in 1976 !!

Since then Sonu nigam has sung this song may be just once or twice again on-stage. I have a video of his concert in London where he sang this one and will try to post it in my next entry. Will also give the link for Jaan ki Baazi song.

Sonu nigam has rendered some really beautiful songs which unfortunately couldnt get much exposure as the movies were low budget. I would like to share some songs that i have come across and hope to find some gems through your responses too

1. Jaane Kya Asar Tera hua – Dil Bechara Pyaar Ka Maara (2004)

2. Meri Kahaani Mera Kissa Ho Tum – Stop (2004)

3. Tanha Ab Na Jeeya Jaaye Tanha – Gaayab(2004)
Amazing lyrics

4. Sooni Hawaa – Bollywood Hollywood (2002)

5. Do Kadam Aur Sahi – Meenaxi (2004)

Hope you enjoy these songs

Music is what feelings sound like ……

Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life. ~Berthold Auerbach

This is what i truly believe in and that is why i am trying to create here a small world of music where everyone can share the poetry , the rhythm , the music – that soothes you. Music ; it is my friend in loneliness , my elixir in pain and sorrow , the one that helps me get through tough times. As said by H.A. Overstreet ” I have my own particular sorrows, loves, delights; and you have yours. But sorrow, gladness, yearning, hope, love, belong to all of us, in all times and in all places. Music is the only means whereby we feel these emotions in their universality.”

The purpose behind this post is to share the music that i listen to. I would like to share what that particular song means to me , what makes it so amazing for me and would hope to get some feed back , some songs that other readers would like to share.

Being a big bollywood music fan , as obvious as it could be , you will often see Rafi saahab , Kishore da , Mukesh and many other being listed but i would like to start off with the singer whom i personally believe to be the God if music is a religion. As said by many , SONU NIGAM – THE MINSTREL CZAR!! A singer par excellence with euphonious voice. You have to see him perform live to believe that he is a far better entertainer than what he sounds in a recording room. Will talk more about these singers and some interesting facts and incidents from their life in future. Would like to end this post here with some of his songs that touches my soul everytime i hear them.

1. Soona man ka aangan – Sonu nigam – Parineeta (2005)

As with any other song of his , sonu nigam has rendered this one with so much feelings … it is hard not to fall in love with this one.

2. Sab kuch bhula diya – Sonu nigam – Hum Tumhaare hain Sanam (2002)

Another one that could make you cry… Beautiful lyrics in accord with the situation of the movie

3. Suno piya Suno zaraa – Sonu nigam – Tere liye (2000)

Very few instruments used in recording this one … Listen Sonu singing this one and u will feel what was the need to use instruments…truly melodious voice.

The thing that amazes me about sonu nigam is that his first playback was for a movie in year 1985… he was 12 years old. His voice has remained unchanged for 23 years. Later on will tell you the song and you can compare it yourselves. Before signing off ……

4. Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna – Sonu nigam – Kahi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006)

love it for the melody and the lyrics !

Keyword Extraction for Contextual Advertisement – WWW 2008

eBay Research Labs presented this interesting poster paper at the WWW 2008 conference, proposing a machine learning approach to extract keywords from the Web for contextual advertising. To automatically present the users with relevant and meaningful ads on web pages, a system has to extract the most representative keywords. This is a classic information extraction type problem, where top k keywords have to selected from a Web page based on some criterion. The papers also deals with the problem of keyword ambiguity and intent. The authors used typical content based features( TF score, Title, Phrase length, Capitalization, Position of keywords, etc.) together with eBay’s query log and category hierarchy to train a classifier. To address the problem of keyword ambiguity, the authors used the category information associated with each extracted keyword to understand the intent of the keyword in the scope of a particualr web page.

Comments :
+ Very simple and interesting paper talking about automatic keyword extraction techniques.
- Did not talk about phrases and how to deal with them.

Extracting Spam Blogs with Co-citation Clusters – WWW 2008

This poster paper was published in the recently concluded WWW 2008 conference in Beijing. The author suggests that spam blogs (splogs) form co-citation clusters because they share advertisement links between each other. The experiments were based on 691,674 blogs, collected during a week in 2007, from the Japanese blogosphere. The author reports that high out-degree blogs are usually spam blogs(95% of the time). An iterative spam traversal algorithm is implemented to extract spams using co-citation cluster analysis of known spam blogs(seed set). The seed set was automatically generated using high out-degree pages and pages containing adult and commercial keywords.

Comments :
* He does not mention what is meant by high out-degree.
* Method seems simple and intuitive, but more exhaustive experiments would provide more insight.
