India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test 2009 – Day 1 Highlights

India won the toss and decided to bat first on a pitch that looked to break-up as the game goes on. But soon it turned out to be Sri Lankans taking full advantage of the dew present early in the morning. Welegedara swinging the ball made it tough for Gambhir and co. to handle the situation and India were reduced to 32 for 4 with big guns Sehwag, Sachin , Laxman joining Gambhir in the pavilion. It looked like a recap of the last match at the same ground against South Africa where India were all out for 76 in first session. But Dravid had his plans of own. Sri Lankan camp looked well prepared for the Sehwags and the Sachins but they dint really cared for “The Wall ” and dint expect him to score 177* odd runs to beat Steve Waugh and become the fifth highest test scorer with 11000 test runs. Dravid added 125 runs with Yuvraj Singh before Yuvraj’s well controlled innings of 68 came to an end with a soft pad and bat looped in the air to short mid off. Indian captain stepped in and milked the bowlers around with converting singles into doubles and occasional trade mark Dhoni drives and lofts full of sheer power. His innings of 110 came to an end with an edge to the keeper with less than 4 overs remaining in the day. Dhoni added another 224 with Dravid in 51 overs @ abt 4.5 an over.Some respite for the Sri lankan’s on a day which began with them dominating the Indian Top-order but ended with Indians in full command.
A really exciting start to a Test Series after log periods of 20-20 and ODIs …. Day 2 promises some more excitement with an unusually aggressive Dravid approaching 200 and lots of footmarks for Bhaji and Mishra.
