Time In A Bottle – Jim Croce

Recently came across the song “Time in a Bottle” by Jim Croce, all I have to say about this song is AWESOME. I don’t know much about music and honestly I don’t care much either, but this song just blows your mind. The simple, crisp and lucid lyrics coupled with the melodious voice of Jim Croce seems to leave an indelible impression on you. The Best thing I love about this song, is the fact that you can sing this to your parents, kids, spouse, basically anyone you love and care about. Anyways below I have posted the lyrics of the song, courtsey lyrics freak enjoy :

If I could save time in a bottle
The first thing that Id like to do
Is to save every day
Till eternity passes away
Just to spend them with you

If I could make days last forever
If words could make wishes come true
Id save every day like a treasure and then,
Again, I would spend them with you

But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do
Once you find them
Ive looked around enough to know
That youre the one I want to go
Through time with

If I had a box just for wishes
And dreams that had never come true
The box would be empty
Except for the memory
Of how they were answered by you

But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do
Once you find them
Ive looked around enough to know
That youre the one I want to go
Through time with

Randy Pausch Quotes

Ever since I heard The Last Lecture video, I have been quoting Randy. And I quote him, not to be cool or hip, but because I honestly believe in those saying. Below are a few of my favourties :

  1. We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand.
  2. The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out; the brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something.
  3. Wait long enough and people will surprise and impress you
  4. Don’t complain; just work harder
  5. Experience is what you get when you didn’t get what you wanted
  6. It is not the things we do in life that we regret on our death bed. It is the things we do not. Find your passion and follow it
  7. Loyalty is a two way street
  8. Luck is truly where preparation meets opportunity
  9. When you see yourself doing something badly and nobody’s bothering to tell you anymore, that’s a very bad place to be. Your critics are the ones telling you they still love you and care
  10. Never lose the child-like wonder. It’s just too important. It’s what drives us.

Thank you for everything Randy Pausch. God Bless you.

Goodbye Mr. Randy Pausch …

Filed under: Personal — Tags: — tdas @ 7:22 pm

Right from the moment I heard the Last Lecture, I knew this day would come sooner or later. No one can change the impending. But the way you lead your life, is not only exemplary but also inspiring for us mere mortals. Yes, I do call myself a mere mortal, because looking at you, I realise how stupid we are. How we fight for petty things in life. Thank you very much Randy, for touching the lives of millions of people around the world. No one has moved me so much in life as you have, with your hour long lecture!! You will always be remembered, honored and respected.

Automatic HomePage Finding

For my Machine Learning course , I have to develop an intelligent system that can automatically identify Official Websites for search queries. For people interested in the details, you can read more about it here Project Proposal. I have to submit the completed project by August 5th, and I haven’t started implementing it. So, in any case I have decided to maintain a journal of the next few days leading to the completion of the project. I will jot down all the ideas, updates and everything else on this blog. Without further adieu, lets get the ball rolling …

Update : I successfully completed my project and handed it, on time :) . For the mathematically inclined, I achieved a ten-fold cross validation accuracy of 80.48%. For details, read the complete report.Automatic HomePage Identification

GenieKnows where your business is …

After four years in the making and patiently waiting, Genieknows finally launched its local search engine. Its a tremendous achievement for a very small company, who dares to dream big. I still remember back in early 2005, when I joined the R&D team (P.S. I was the third member :P ), I was kinda skeptical about the prospect of our product. Working weekends, overtime, we slowly trudged towards our goal. Keeping the emotional rants aside, I just want this wonderful feeling to sink in. Obviously this is not a finished product and we are continually trying to improve it. We are very well aware of the stiff competition that we face, neither do we have the resources nor the financial clout to compete directly with the other G ;) ,but that does not bother us. As Randy Pausch so rightly said, “Do the right thing and the good things will come to you…”, Thats all we are trying to do, “Keeping it real and Keeping it local”. In some future posts I’d discuss some of the cool features of our product and may be some secrets about ranking higher in Genieknows search :P

People don’t search the Web on weekends!!

I have been analysing the traffic on this blog for about 6 months now, and I have observed a steep fall in the number of page views over the weekends. Even though I only get about 50 pageviews a day(mostly through google search), that number plunges down by 70 – 80% during the weekends!!. Due to the technical nature of my blog, most queries that I rank for are only searched for during weekdays. My guess is, its mostly students and computer science professionals, who apparently don’t seem to work over the weekends :P . Anyways, it would be really interesting to see some study on the distribution of keywords in Google search, over a week.

Going Back To School …

I am going back to school tomorrow after a break of 14 months. I am feeling like a bundle of nerves (happy+nervous+skeptical+sad+…) right now. I have not been allowed to do a thesis for my Masters, and the only way I can switch is, if i get straight A’s in the first four courses. Obviously that is no easy task, in fact it will be insanely tough. But as Randy Pausch so aptly said: “Brick Walls are there for a reason…it shows us,how badly we want something”. So here I am, fighting against brick wall odds, to prove to the world I am good enough.

I feel like an old, aged warrior, preparing for one last battle, one last shot at glory…

Google let me down :(

Filed under: Personal — tdas @ 3:22 pm

I have been an ardent fan of Google for the past 5 years or so. I seem to like every product that Google rolls out. About 2 years ago I joined the Blog bandwagon and signed up for an account in Blogspot. I will admit that I am not an active blogger, but lack of a Category feature in Blogspot is shocking. May be I missed something, but reading a few forum postings, I think there is no easy way you can nicely group your posts in Blogspot. (P.S. Obviously there are hacks available). To cut the long story short, I have been disappointed by Google for the first time and thats the main reason I have decided to give WordPress a shot. The title of the blog does not relate at all to the content of the blog, its there more for historical reasons. So here I am posting my first blog entry, hopefully this will the first of many more to come.
